Blackrod v Sutton (St Helens) Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 04 May 2014 at 14:00
Sutton (St Helens) Cricket Club Won Sutton (St Helens) CC - 3rd XI - Won by 21 runs

Match report Sutton continued their encouraging start to the season with victory, not without scares, at newly promoted Blackrod. Winning the toss, Skipper Ashley Barnes chose to bat on a good hard pitch, with a dry look indicating that spin may play its part later.
The start of the innings could hardly have been worse. Openers James York and Lewis Bolton, both desperately seeking early season form, found none, being dismissed without making any significant start. Barnes fared no better, hopelessly misjudging length from left arm spinner Tipping and being trapped LBW without troubling the scorers.
The one bright spark at the top of the Sutton order was Jamie Greener. Belligerent from the start, he found the boundary with such ease that he knocked seamer Lawless out of the attack.
The middle order had to rebuild from 31 for 3, with Matt Hockenhull and Andrew Worthington offering support to Greener. Tipping was still turning the ball and the swing of Perrara unsettled both.
Still, the ship had been steadied by the time Joe Smith took to the crease. Promoted from the youth ranks, Smith impressed immediately. Senior players from both sides commented that his 23 showed a talent that will doubtless bring runs aplenty in the years to come.
Tipping accounted for Smith and Greener, for an impressive 76, and exposed the tail with Sutton still some way from a defendable total. Luke Hughes survived an early stumping chance, the only blemish behind the stumps from the impressive Burton, but then timed the ball beautifully (successive back foot straight drives were for the collector’s album.) Aided and abetted by Jonny Green and a cameo from Adam Onion, he guided the team towards full batting points. However, once number 11 Craig Campbell started blocking, Hughes felt he had no choice but to swing from the hip. Missing a straight one, he found that Burton would not reprieve him again and he was easily stumped leaving Sutton 3 runs short of full bonus points on 197. With final figures of 6 for 46, Tipping had been chief tormentor.
Claiming 4 unused overs, the home side had plenty of time to match the score but seemed not to need it as openers, Pryle and Tipping jnr., dealt with the pace attack of Green and Hughes with aplomb, moving on at a run a ball. As Green suffered a knee injury, forcing him out of the attack, and Barnes shelled an eminently takeable catch at mid-off, heads could have dropped as the scoreboard clicked over to 70 without loss.
This, however, was the turning point of the game. 2 in an over from Hughes, followed by the prized scalp of Tipping jnr. for change bowler Campbell left Blackrod with 3 wickets down and still stuck on the same score. Campbell, the fastest bowler on show today, took a further two wickets in a four over burst that tipped the game firmly towards the visitors.
Guesting first team spinner Greener bagged Baty for a golden before Joe Smith’s clever off spin and the nagging line and length from Worthington brought further success to each and the game looked over when the home team slipped to 93 for 8.
The match brought one final twist, however, with lower order batsman Walsh opening his shoulders to great effect, ending on an unbeaten 48. The rest of the tail could not live with him though and a valiant chase fell 20 runs short when last man Tipping was run out attempting a suicidal second.
A more impressive all-round team performance from Sutton than their season opener, then, not so reliant on one individual performance, and great encouragement – but again the top order failed to contribute and that has to be a major concern as the season continues.
